Most people believe the first colonie was the one at plymouth but it wasn't it was Jamestown well Jamestown was the most successful. There were many issues for the them but they got through it

Onate Friend or Foe?

   Juan de Onate has all ways be a big topic of people in new mexico. History people always consider Onate as small figure of the history of New Mexico because he "Discover" New Mexico. The idea is was he good for New Mexico or bad for how he got it. He born in 1550 in Zacatecas, Mexico. He dad owned a mine and he was never a famous person from his discovery. New Mexicans are they only people that know who he is. It is said that in Spain where he should be most well known he isn't even in the history books.

 The biggest goal for Onate was to find Gold and Silver this would make him rich and would make him very importation to the Spanish. His job was to establish missions and territory for Spain. On 21 September 1595, King Phillip II of Spain awarded Onate a contract to settle New Mexico(Onate,Juan de). He also need to take Franciscans with him to spread the religion. Most people consider him good because he spread the religion, but he also did kill some of the Acoma people and the other people he conquered.

   The most horrible thing he did was with the Acoma pueblo. This was one of the biggest challenges Onate faced trying to conquer New Mexico. Acoma was on a 350 sandstone ridge were it was almost impossible to get up to. The first encounter was very peaceful, but the next one wasn't Onate tried to put a tax on the Acoma people. When the tax collectors tried to get the food from the people the killed 13 of them and that also include Onate Nephew. Onate was ferrous ordered the village be destroyed. They killed 2000 of the Acoma people and only 200 survived. All the men old enough to fight had there right foot cut off. Then were slaves for 20 years. The woman and children got the hand cut of and the children shipped to mexico to be slaves. The Acoma Pueblo revolted and when a modern statue was made for him it had it right foot cut off.

    He was sent back to Mexico and charged with many charges and sent back to Spain. This tarnished his once clean image he kept, but now people know him for killing the Acoma people.

 The most upstarting of Onate was the XII Travelers Projected a statue to be placed in El Paso Texas. The problem was that they were going to use public money to make this statute.Since he was known as a killer there was backlash and they finished it, but only from big donations from private citizens.People say the Onate is a Kit Carson ,Thomas Jefferson, or Christopher Columbus they were all contiveral people but they still help make this great country what it is today. He did discover New Mexico and establish it, but he also did kill thousands of people to do it. Juan De Onate well always be known as the person who Discover New Mexico. That will never change, I believe that he was good man for what he was trying to accomplish, but he will never be liked because he had to kill for it.
